FAQ (Frequently asked questions)
Is the effectiveness of electrotherapy evident?
The effectiveness of functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. FES therapy is recommended by international guidelines which are based on these studies. For more information on the effectiveness of electrotherapy and a selection of international guidelines click here .
Electrotherapy: Which patients should be treated with caution?
For some factors, caution is required when treating with electricity. In therapy, these factors are referred to as absolute or relative contraindications. Absolute means that the therapy must not be carried out under any circumstances and relative
means that it should only be carried out under certain circumstances or with precautions.
Some of these contraindications may be:
- pacemakers
- cardiac arrhythmia
- seizure disorders (uncontrollable epilepsy)
- open wounds in the area of application
- tumour diseases in the stimulation area
- pregnancy
Who will explain to me, as a patient, how to use the STIWELL® electrical stimulation device prior to starting therapy?
Your physician or therapist will explain how to use the device and will also determine the contact points of the electrodes, the frequency of use, and the current intensity to be set.
How long can I use the STIWELL® electrical stimulation device?
The duration of home-based therapy depends on your diagnosis and the progress of therapy. Thus, it is always determined by your physician.
Where are the electrodes placed?
During your training, your physician/therapist will determine the most suitable electrode placement points for you.
