In 1994, Theo Kelz, an Austrian police officer from Carinthia, lost both forearms in a demolition bomb blast. In the same year, Theo Kelz started thinking about getting hands transplanted from a deceased donor.
Kelz' dream of having real hands again was fulfilled in March 2000 when Prof. Margreiter performed an implantation in spectacular surgery at the Innsbruck University Hospital. Kelz was the second person in the world to receive hands from a donor.
Theo Kelz was assisted by associate professor Dr Ninkovic in the early days of his hand rehabilitation. In order to activate the functioning of the transplanted hands, Kelz used the programme for denervated muscles of the STIWELL® electrotherapy device, which is especially suitable for nerve regeneration.
